Star likes to move that’s for sure. She’s a very forward motion type horse but most of that is nervousness at this point. She’s basically afraid of just about everything & a direct contrast to my halflinger mare that I’ve been training since last fall.

I rode my mare after working with Star yesterday and there is nothing like someone else’s right-brained crazy ass fearful horse to make me appreciate my small level-headed steady halflinger. She has her own issues but if I had to choose, it wouldn’t be the crazy giraffe at this point

Photos of Star (my BIL’s mare that I’m trying to train) from yesterday which was our first time in the round pen together. Wasn’t a great session but wasn’t awful. Just more of a time to feel her out & she where her issues might be. She has many. Mostly, she’s so herd bound & attached to her mother that she’s been with for THE ENTIRE 8 YEARS OF HER LIFE that she’s a bit nuts out on her own. She calms down when she’s with ppl but not enough yet & I’m not sure she’ll ever be the kind of horse that can go out on her own. Not after all this time of basically no one working with her. I have my doubts :/

She has an awesome trot … she really stretches out and reaches with her legs so no where near collected but very cool & she’s part Tennessee Walker so it’s not like all hard and bouncy … it’s just hard to describe but seems like it would be a lovely trot to ride & would cover some serious ground.

Parts of her are super shiny but not all of her. I wish her whole body was like that and it would be if I was in charge of her diet.

Third photo: Giraffe impression. She is tall & she likes to put her head waaaay the fuck up in the air. Ugh.

Fourth one: Little do you know that when you put this old ugly saddle on me I will try to buck it off. (she did try … it didn’t come off. next time I hope she doesn’t act like that. She’s been ridden before but always in big huge western saddles. This one should be like a no-problem situation)

It’s always good to roll when you’re hot & sweaty in the round pen!

Aside from all that I’m bitching about, if yahoo thinks I would use its massive bullshit...

Am I the only one that kind of has an issue with this? Draft horses aren’t meant to be jumping huge jumps because of how heavy they are and imagine all that weight coming down on their front legs time after time…

I agree to a certain extent, but that is not a huge jump. I think if they were careful with the amount of jumping the horse does/not jumping on hard ground/looking after legs well then it will probably be okay

Looks to me like when I see draft horses their legs are pretty proportionate to the size of their bodies. I know my halflinger (which is really a short draft horse) has perfectly big strong legs & good big feet for her stout body. She can handle jumping just fine. Besides, that jump looks like something that horse could just about walk over anyway.

How is it “better” that some of these Thoroughbreds that folks jump with their really thin legs & small feet are built any “better” for jumping?

The tea I’ve been drinking to help me combat this post viral fatigue I’ve been experiencing. I felt like shit for another 2 weeks after I recovered from a very nasty norovirus.

I bought this tea at my local herb shop & they do sell it online. It’s called Low Iron Tea.

It’s straining here. My friend Duane (leekfixer here on Tumblr) advised me to brew it 2 tablespoons to a cup of water for an hour (it’s mostly roots) I blended it this time with white tea (I brew the white tea separately) and that’s apple mint from my garden in there with a huge glob of raw honey. I made four cups and I’ll probably dilute with a bit of ice & drink 8-12 ounces a day.

My Garden Hat. It lives on the foot of my bed to remind me to actually put it on and thus protect my face & neck from the sun. :) It’s a great hat … Columbia. Probably not a proper gardening hat but not much in my life is all that proper.

I’m pretty sure I found it at a yard sale or Goodwill. I know I didn’t buy it brand new & it wasn’t a gift.

Special skeins of yarn I’ve spun for my friend Duane & his wife. I’ll be knitting some things from it this year before the cold weather sets in down Georgia way.

Can’t seem to get a photo that shows how cool all the coils are in the green yarn.

I dyed the romney wool fiber that became the green yarn, and also the bright skein of wensleydale x dorset yarn. The grey is a nice sturdy soft regular old wool spun from combed top.

Am planning a crazy skein of lots of different wools & fibers left over from plying all the yarns I’ve been spinning lately and will also incorporate (somehow) some mane hair from my little mini mare Diamond for Duane. Not *quite* sure how I’m going to do it yet but it’ll come to me :)

I bought a used HDR synthetic saddle which I realize is not a great saddle but for those of you with wide flat-backed round-barreled horses like my halflinger, I bought a used wide one and it fits her better than the four others I’ve tried.

She’s not fat & she’s not the flattest or roundest halflinger out there so YMMV but if you’re desperate like I was, might be an option.

I love my leather Courbette which is a 32 cm I think? It’s not a great fit for her but adequate & we don’t go for long hacks in it. She doesn’t hate it & goes well under it. We don’t do any sort of grueling riding at this point & if/when I get more serious about jumping or cross country I’ll buy something better for that. For now my close contact Courbette (old school … it’s a Stylist II) is GREAT for schooling & I think it’ll be good for starting on small jumps & cavaletti. That saddle is wonderful for teaching me how to ride. The HDR is a more secure saddle & I bought it for hacking & trail riding but not sure it puts me in a great position by any means.

Now I need to find a properly fitting headstall *sigh* I love this old really supple hunt bridle but it’s too big & I don’t think I can make any more holes to make it small enough. Guess I need to try out an Arab or cob-sized headstall on this mare.

I need a prettier saddle pad. I think I need a nice dark green … should look nice on a chestnut :)
